Ye Olde Hermeneutic XII #4

Ye Olde Hermeneutic

?This is perhaps the most challenging task with which we have been charged. It is not so much about being a thorn in the church?s side or about making trouble (though we are often involved in both), it is, as Walter Brueggemann reflects in The Prophetic Imagination, about being both critical and analytical, as well as people who energize with hope.? News for the Weekend of October 29-30, 2016

Welcome to our Sunday Presider, The Rev. Molly Haws

Eric is off to a family gathering in Minnesota (to celebrate a niece?s confirmation?a particularly big deal in the ELCA) and we are delighted to have the Rev. Molly Haws preside for our Sunday morning Eucharistic celebration. Molly has recently retired as Vicar of The Church of the Redeemer in San Rafael. Your dean?s memory vividly recalls Molly as a major voice in the Diocese of California pushing for socially responsible investing. It is an issue area that can provoke some pretty vigorous (defensive?) responses. Molly modeled a way every deacon should be able to emulate by never losing her cool or getting caught in cyclical argumentation. She was articulate, spoke with passion but not so as to close off her listener even, or especially, if he be at odds with what she was promoting.

We are blessed to have Molly with us.

[and, BTW, stepping in to be interim/priest-in-charge at Redeemer is the School for Deacons very own Daniel London. We keep it all in the family!]

The Changes and Chances of this Mortal Life

Mary Louise came to the office this week. It was the first time in months. She is holding her own, medically and was eager to be helpful. She took her office computer home where she hopes to be able, soon, to generate transcripts and our annual fund raising ?ask? of congregations in the fours dioceses we historically serve.

The Other Weekend Parking Craziness

Saturday of the next school weekend, [NOV. 19] the CDSP Celtic Cross Society will, again, rent out spaces in the Parking lot as a fund raiser for their missionary fund. It is THE BIG GAME; the annual contest between cross-bay rivals, The University of California and Stanford. This is a year that Cal hosts of the game. Parking will be at a premium.

The start time for the game is determined by the TV networks. We will know that closer to the day.

General protocol. If you come in Friday night, part in the lot, but get up a few minutes early and look for street parking. If you come Saturday morning, park on the street. For faculty coming mid-day, you might want to contact Celtic Cross and reserve a space ($35 for a good cause). Let them know your eta.

Words to the Wise from Rebecca
Not much to add for this weekend.  I will get invoices for the retreat in January in your mail folders for this weekend if I have time on Friday. But if not, they?ll be ready by the next class weekend. Please leave send me an email if your significant other plans to attend. Also, even though it is not until December, you might want to issue invitations to the community dinner early, since that tends to be a very busy month.

Dates/Events of Note

It?s Convention Time.
The Diocese of California has already held its annual convention. One deacon was elected Deputy to General Convention [congratulations Hailey McKeefry Delmas]; one deacon ran for Standing Committee but was not elected, even though there were three openings. So much for ?power bloc voting? by deacons. Deacon Vicki Gray brought a resolution supporting the anti-pipeline indigenous protest at Standing Rock. She is now off to join the protest and learn?accompanied by Archdeacon Emerita Kathleen VanSickle, and Deacon Nancy Pennekamp-Cumming. A large diocesan pilgrimage of support has been proposed for January.

Even if you have no official role at your diocese?s convention, students should go and see how the councils of the church work. There is also likely to be a School for Deacons table or display where you could be helpful.

The. triennial Province VIII Deacons Conference will be NOVEMBER 10-12, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV hosted by the great deacon community in the Diocese of Nevada
